ABOUT PRABHU TARUN
Prabhu Tarun was initially a newsletter founded by a group of youngsters of the Pathare Prabhu community in the year 1923. Back then it was the only means of social media besides the regular physical interaction of the community members who lived in close proximity in and around ‘Palav’. Some scattered to Khar and very few beyond Khar. The monthly newsletter would carry news about the community members and the members would feel connected and could stay united in those days knowing whats happening about who’s who of the community.
Times changed and our community members started migrating outside Mumbai and abroad as well. The newsletter continued to serve its members however as the geographical distance grew, the need to keep the community members grew. New ideas were implemented by Prabhu Tarun and in the 80’s, under the able leadership of the then Editor Mr. Suhas Kothare, Prabhu Tarun offered to encourage the talented Prabhus in every field. Talent in terms of writing, oratory skills was encouraged and new budding writers were introduced. Mr. Suhas Kothare also encouraged performing arts in the form of plays, dance, singing etc. and organized several cultural activities to promote amateur talent with a view to get the Pathare Prabhu community together. Decades passed and the Prabhu Tarun family grew with new budding writers under the able guidance of our Ex- Editor Mr. Vihang Nayak and our current Editor Prof. Suhasini Kirtikar.
In the current scenario, our community has scattered even more and spread all over the world. With the increase in inter-caste marriages, connect between the Original Pathare Prabhu with its community has diminished. The readership of the monthly issue has dropped. People are no more interested in keeping contact with their roots and this is an alarming situation if we have to keep our community alive.
Change is necessary with the changing times. Hence we at Prabhu Tarun decided to evolve with changing times and have taken to Digital Media for communication which is not only our present but also the future. Prabhu Tarun has started its Digital Media activities from the year 2020 and conducted Karaoke events with the intention of getting maximum participation from our community members and getting the entire community together under one common platform from all over the world.
Our vision is to unite all the Prathare Prabhus together and keep them associated with their roots. Hence we decided to revamp our Website and make it a one stop website for our community where they can get every information about our community under one roof. We also intend to introduce the non Pathare Prabhu spouses to our culturally rich community by exposing them to our traditions, rituals, food and culture and make them feel that they belong to our community. This in turn will get the Gen next of the Pathare Prabhu Clan interested and updated about their roots and hopefully they will continue to keep our about-to-be extinct community alive for generations to come.
